Gotta roll with the punches...

Bit of a mixed week in my Year of Projects. After going through all my outstanding WIPs on Wednesday I made a conscious decision to make more of an effort to get them finished. I started taking Forest Lace with me to work, managing to knit about four rows on the train each way of the commute. I took it to Thursday night roleplay, and got quite a lot done. I was starting to feel like I might actually get somewhere with it before we get to June next year! Then..... disaster.

Oh no!

My yarn snapped. I was halfway through my second skp stitch of the row, and the slipped stitch snapped as I was working the k2tog part. I managed to slip the stitch from the row below onto the needle, so it didn't completely unravel all the way down through the rows. But I didn't think trying to fix it while I was on the train was a good idea, so I carefully tied the broken ends together, and packed it away in my bag so it would be safe.

I know what I have to do. I've got to unravel back a couple of rows, till I get to the point of the break, so I can rework that row, joining the yarn back in when I reach the part where the yarn snapped. However, I am terrified of doing it by myself, because I have no idea how to make sure I don't lose any stitches as I unravel. So I will take it along to Sticks n String on Tuesday and hopefully one of the more experienced knitters there will be able to assist me!

On the other hand, I've made significantly more progres with the Thinking of Me scarf. I was up early on Saturday morning for the rugby (Wales kicked off at 6am!) but didn't want to work on anything that required too much concentration during the games. So instead of working on any of my existing WIPs I cast on (and ended up finishing) a new dishcloth. Today, however, we didn't get up so early, just watched the games from this morning on Sky plus at a more sensible hour. I didn't mind concentrating more on my knitting and less on the game for those two (especially the New Zealand game).

So I finished the scarf! I was worried I'd run out of yarn, but made it to the end with a few yards to spare. I've been too busy since finishing it earlier to soak it and block it, so here's a terrible shot of it fresh off the needles.

Crumpled mess? Another blocking miracle coming up soon!

With a finished knit off the needles, I suppose I could cast on something new (although I do have another dishcloth on the go now too....). I've got yarn and needles for three of the knits on my queue: Hypernova, Sojourn Falls and 198 yds of heaven. Hypernova's supposed to be next, and I am looking forward to winding my lovely Wollmeise with my new swift. Plus, I was RAK'd the pattern last month so ought to get started on it really. Sojourn Falls I need beads for, but will introduce me to cabling, and 198yds will be my first triangular knit..

I think I'll give it a few days before I make my decision though.

  1. Oh what a scary moment you had ... I've never had yarn break mid-way through a row (or project for that matter) but it sounds like you handled it beautifully and have a game plan.  Lovely FO and, yes, you should give yourself a little time before you cast on your next project as they all look so great to knit.

  2. Gosh I've never had that happen when I've been knitting. I would suggest knitting backwards so you don't loose any stitches, but i suspect it will be easier with someone to show you what to do =) I hope you get it fixed. And the scarf looks great!

  3. Ugh, I hate when that happens.  Will you do a joinless join or the traditional way where you have a few more ends to weave in?

  4. Oh good gracious - I'd be upset. I had it happen to me a couple months ago with a thread coaster I was crocheting :( upsetting but fixable. Good plan to take it to the experts. That's what I'd have to do :)

  5. Aw, how sad that the yarn snapped. But how great that you have people you can go to for help in repairing it!

  6. Love the colour of your scarf.  I hope you'll show us a pic of it after you've blocked it. That's a real shame about your splitting yarn - don't you hate it when that happens?  Good luck with the fix.

  7. What a shame about your snapped yarn! I hope that Sticks n String can help you to get going again. Your scarf looks lovely too, such a pretty pattern!

  9. Oh noes, broken yarn :( Good luck with the fixing of that! Happy to see the beautiful red scarf is now finished, can't wait to see it blocked.

  10. So sorry about the broken yarn - it happens to the best of us on occasion.

  11. You scarf is very nice.  Great color.  My suggestion would be to go ahead and cast on all three projects and then take if from there.

  12. Nightmare snapping scenario there. When I needed to undo lots of stitches I put another needle through a lower row (through each stitch) and made sure I had the right number of stitches on there before I ripped it. Worked a treat.

Lots of loveliness in this post.

Oh and if you fancy a cupp at unravel.... :)

  13. I'm still fairly new to this whole knitting thing, so I will probably just join in the traditional way and have a couple of ends to weave in. I'm sure it won't be too noticeable!

  14. I hoped needle requirements would force my choice, but that only ruled out Sojourn Falls, as my 4mm needles are in use with Forest Lace. The lure of the Wollmeise proved too much in the end, so I cast on Hypernova last night!
